I have a long way to go in the research of my Biggins line. The first Biggins record I have is of Sarah Biggins (relationship unknown), listed in the 1782 Sussex County, Virginia census (page 44). It appears she later remarries to Mathew Winey.

My early Biggins research begins in Washington County, Ohio. Two brothers, John (b. 1779 VA) and Thomas Biggins (b. 1787 VA) settled in Washington County some time around 1800, if their parents were in the county too is unknown. Based on census records Thomas was married twice. He was married at the time of the 1820 census and had no children—by 1830 his first wife apparently died. In 1840, Thomas was living with a much younger wife who apparently had two children – a son between 15 and 20 and a daughter between 10 and 15 years old. By 1850, the same year of his death, 67 year old Thomas was again by himself. It is reported by Biggins descendant, Ida Helen McCarty, of Pennville Indiana, that Thomas had 12 children that were raised by his brother John, but I do not see anything to confirm this assertion. Ida additionally provided the information that Thomas Biggins of Augusta County, VA married Mary Ann Rutherford.

According to Ida McCarty, the father of Mary Ann Rutherford, wife of Thomas Biggins, was Daniel Rutherford. Daniel Rutherford came from County Downs, Ireland. He married Catherine Laird (Leaird), a Scotch girl, in Scotland. They came to America and settled in Washington Co, OH, near the present site of Marietta. The place they bought for a home was on Wolf's Creek, a branch of the Muskingdom River at Waterford, now Watertown - this was before 1796. There they reared a large family. All this Rutherford data can be found in the Marietta Court House and city library. I have no data on Mary Ann Rutherford except that a person of the same name married James Harvey Biggins on November 15, 1855 in Washington County, Ohio.

Early proof of Biggins presence in Washington County comes from an 1803 census record of “John Biggin” in Waterford Township S. In 1804, John Biggins married Sarah Orison (daughter of Mathew?) in Washington County. John Biggins is named in the Washington County tax list, in 1810 and the birth of his son George W. (my fourth great-grandfather) was in 1808 Washington County.

George W. Biggins is first found on his own in the 1840 census with 3 children under 5 years of age (Brazil, Mary A., and Sarah J.). Ida McCarty reports that George married his cousin, Ellen Howard. I have expended a lot of energy trying to prove George’s marriage and link to the Howard line without luck. Following leads provided by Ida McCarty, I have track numerous Marshall County, Virginia Howard families that are linked to George’s aunt, Mary (Polly) Biggins, who married Samuel B. Howard (b. 1794 VA).

I have not connected all the Howard family members I found in the 1850 Marshall County, Virginia census—more importantly; I have no real connection to Ellen Howard's parentage. Her parents could be Samuel and Mary Biggins Howard themselves, based on census records that support the fact that they had a unknown daughter in the same age range as Ellen. Anyway, I am still not sure how Ellen ended up in Washington County, OH, except that several of Samuel and Mary Biggins children ended up in neighboring Athens County, OH. I have seen a couple Howard families in Washington County census records but none that could be matched at this time. The 1850 census shows Samuel A. (age 60 b. VA) and Margaret Howard (age 55 b. VA) living in Barlow, Washington County – this is a lead I have followed but no other information is forth coming on these possible parents to Ellen Howard Biggins. Two of George Biggins brothers (Samuel and James Harvey) followed two Howard Brothers (William J. and Lewis L.) to Athens County, Ohio—a coincidence or something else I do not know.

Trying to verify and fill in family data found through internet sources, I recorded what Biggins family information I could find in 1880 Ohio census reports. Many of the family connections were possible due to the Will and Testament of John Biggins, unmarried son of John and Sarah Orison Biggins and brother to George W. Biggins. John’s estate required tracking of surviving immediate family members. Listed in the Will were the surviving children and grandchildren of George W. Biggins who died in 1878. Included in the Will was my third great-grandmother, Margaret (Maggie) Quillen.

In 1880, Maggie Biggins was married to James Henry Quillen of Meigs County, Ohio, and living in Ward Township, Hockings County, Ohio. James was the son of Franklin Uriah and Martha Capehart Quillen of Meigs County. Also living in Ward Township was Mary E. Biggins, widow of Maggie’s oldest brother, Brazil Biggins. Mary was alone with her two children, George W. (age 5) and Charles W. (age 4).

James and Maggie moved to Montgomery, Fayette County, West Virginia some time after the 1883 birth of their second child, Verna Mae Quillen. In 1889, Margaret Biggins Quillen died—the circumstance of her death and actual date/location are unconfirmed (I could not find a record of her death in Fayette County). James returned to Meigs County, Ohio, where he is recorded in the 1900 census with his second wife, Vienna Webster Quillen.

James and Margaret Biggins had three children from their marriage. The oldest, Josephine (Josie) Stark Quillen, born in March 1882 (Carbon Hill, Fayette County, Ohio), was my great-great-grandmother. Josie married James William Franklin "Frank" Darlington on 4 September 1900, in Fayette County, West Virginia. Frank Darlington was the son of Benjamin Franklin and Sarah Frances Craig Darlington of Fayette County. On 14 January 1901, James and Josephine Quillen Darlington gave birth to twins Carmen and Beulah—Carmen Pearl Darlington was my great-grandmother.

Brice Howard

From "HISTORY OF THE UPPER OHIO VALLEY," Vol. I, page 705. Brant & Fuller, 1890. BRICE HOWARD Brice Howard, a well-known old resident of Marshall county, of which he is a native, was born September 28, 1820, the son of Reason and Cassie (Burley) Howard (See photos), both natives of West Virginia. The father, a farmer by occupation, died about 1880, at the age of eighty-eight years, and mother died sometime before, at the age of eighty-eight years, and the mother died some time before, at the age of sixty years and more. Reason was the son of Samuel Howard, who moved from Hampshire to Marshall county about 1795. He died in Blackford county, Ind., at the residence of one of his sons, in 1878, at the age of ninety-three years. His wife Polly Biggs, died about the year 1870. Of their seven children, three survive. Brice Howard is one of eleven children of his parents, nine of whom are living. He was reared amid pioneer scenes in Marshall county, and entertains lively recollections of the days when wolves, bears, panthers and wildcats infested the forests. As a farmer he has been industrious and successful, and is now prosperous and everywhere esteemed. He and wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal church, and he is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and in politics a republican. In 1844 Mr. Howard was married to Barbara, daughter of Edward and Betsey Strickland, natives of Maryland, who came to Marshall county about 1825, and were widely known as pioneers. Mr. Howard and wife have eleven children: Catherine, wife of Green Davis, of Cameron; Lindsay, died November 26, 1853, aged two years; Frank, married to Miss Burton, and living at Newark, Ohio; George, of Cameron, married to Miss Dayton; Edward, of Greene county, Penn., married to Miss Stout; Ella, wife of Thomas Parsons, of Moundsville; Elizabeth; Cora, wife of Frank Woodburn, of Cameron; and Metta.

John Morris

John Morris settled in this township in 1829. He was born in Loudoun county, Virginia, January 17, 1797. He first emigrated to Belmont county, Ohio, where he remained until he permanently settled in Watertown. He was married November 22, 1827, to Delilah Biggins, daughter of John Biggins of this township. She was born January 22, 1805. The fruit of this union was eight children, viz: William, Minerva, John, Nancy, Temer, Elwood, Eliza and Harvey, four of whom are still living—John, Nancy, Temer, and Harvey.[45]

In the matter of the Will of John Biggins, deceased

Be it remembered that heretofore to wit: at a Court of Probate within and for the County of Washington and State of Ohio, holden at the Court house in the City of Marietta on the 22^nd day of April A. D. 1881 before the Hon. C. F. Frazyer Judge of said Court came Diana Biggins and presented the Court an instrument of writing purporting to be the last will and testament of John Biggins late of Watertown Township in the County of Washington and State of Ohio deceased, and made application for the admission of the said instrument of writing to probate as the last will and testament of the said John Biggins deceased. And said will is in the words and figures following to wit:

In the name of the benevolent father of all: I john Biggins, of Watertown, County of Washington in the State of Ohio, do make and declare and publish this my last Will and Testament.

Item 1^st. I give, devise and bequeath to my sister Diana Biggins, my home farm on which I now reside in Watertown tp. Being 40 acres more or less in lots 821 and 825 in Town 4, Range 10, and all the stock of every kind, household goods, furniture, provisions and all other goods and chattels of every description, - (she paying my just debts and funeral expenses) – to have and use as means of support during her natural life.

Item 2^nd. After the decease of my said sister, Diana Biggins, it is my desire that the aforesaid real estate, and any remaining personal property of my estate, shall descend to my brothers James H. and Samuel H. Biggins – and I do hereby devise and bequeath the same in equal shares of one-half to each, and of my said brothers, thus paying all my debts and funeral expenses of said sister Diana and in case of their decease to their children.

I devise that no appraisement and no sale of my personal property be made, and that the Court of Probate direct the omission of the same in pursuance of the Statute.

I do hereby revoke all former wills by me made

In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12^th day of June, in the year of 1875

And that thereupon afterwards to wit on the 22^nd day of April there was issued out of said Court, a certain notice to the next of kin of said decedent, which notice is in the words and figures of following wit.

Biggins (minor under 14 years of age) and Charles Biggins (minor under 14 years of age)[46] you are hereby notified that on the 22 day of April A.D. 1881, an instrument of writing , purporting to be the last Will and Testament of John Biggins late of Watertown Township, in said county, deceased, was produced in open court, and an application to admit the same to probate, was on the same day made in said court. Said application will be for hearing before this court, on the 1^st day of Jun A.D. 1881 at 10 o’clock A.M.

In the name of God Amen: I James H. Howard of the County of Marshall and State of West Virginia being of sound mind and disposing memory do make this my last Will and testament hereby revoking all other wills by me heretofore made in manner and form following that is to say: First to my wife Sarah Howard the one third part of my personal Estate after the payment of my debts and funeral expenses also all of my land north of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail Road. said land and personal property to be in lien of dower. Second to my son Hems Howard my lower farm on Big Run he paying one hundred Dollars as hereinafter provided. Third to my son Wilie J. Howard one hundred acres of land off of my upper farm on Big Run he paying one hundred dollars as hereinafter provided. Fourth to my son Lewis Lee Howard all the remainder of my land South of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad he paying for all over one hundred acres of the same whatever it may be worth divided equally between his Sisters Mary Cooper, Margaret Jane Fitzgerald, Elizabeth Richey and Cassey Ann Howard and paying also one hundred dollars as hereinafter provided. Fifth to my son George Washington Howard, at the death of my wife, one good horse and all the land bequeathed to my wife as her dower with the privilege of getting firewood off the land bequeathed to my Son Lewis Lee Howard. Sixth to my daughters Mary Cooper Margaret, Jane Fitzgerald and Casey Ann Howard the sum of one hundred Dollars each to be paid to them by my three sons Mems Howard, Wilie 3. Howard and Lewis Lee Howard within two years after my death my daughter Elizabeth Richey having already received one hundred Dollars. Seventh the remainder of my personal property to be equally divided among all my daughters. Eight I do hereby appoint William R. I James H. Howard of Marshall County State of West Virginia having made my last will and testament bearring date the Twenty Eighth day of May Eighteen hundred and Sixty Eight do now make this Codicil and direct that it shall be taken as part of the same. The land devised by me in the Will aforesaid to my Son Wylie J. Howard he having since died it is my desire if it is not sold before shall be sold after my death and from the proceeds of such sale, I direct that my wife Sarah Howard shall be paid five hundred Dollars that each of my daughters be paid one hundred Dollars, and the remainder shall be equally divided among all my children. I also desire that my sons George and Lee togeather keep my wagon my Mowing Machine and my Cider Mill as I consider they should go with the land bequeathed to them.

McDonald Jr. the said Will, and Codicil is considered fully proved & is thereupon ordered to be recorded as and for the last Will & testament with the Codicil thereto of James N. Howard Decd. and Wm. R. McDonald Jr. & Thomas Howard the Executor in said Will names who made oath thereto & together with W. R. McDonald Jr. & Mems Howard their Securities who qualified as to their sufficiancy entered into and acknowledged their bond in the final sum of $2,000.

Conditioned and payable as the law directs. Thereupon certified for obtaining a probate of said Will & Codicil in due form and it is ordered that Robert A Sticks, Brice Howard, J.E.Sticks and Samuel Howard be & they are appointed appraisors of said Estate they being first duly sworn for that purpose.
