There is a lot of Huffman information available on the internet – much of which are pieces of vital data that still don’t quite come together into a comprehensive ancestral file on my particular branch. Information from Mary L. Henke on the internet site of Helen S. Durbin http://geocities.com/hsdurbin/hufflink.html provides some Huffman family background – that requires additional research.
My Huffmans are very well documented (not by me) I will give you a sketch and an explanation. John Huffman, of Eisern, Ger. b. 1663 -md- Gertrude Richardson and among others had a son John, b. 1692 in Siegen, Ger. He came to America with the German colony & married 7, Nov. 1721 Anna Catherine Haeger in Faurquir Co.Va. He died there 3, July 1772. Among others they had a son John, b.10,Apr. 1739 in Fauquier. He died after 1812 in Butler Co. Ohio. His wife was Elizabeth, maiden name unknown. Then we have another John (there is one in every generation) among others (I do have all these names of other children) This John's wife was Mary, again no maiden name he was b. 1775 in Rockingham Co.Va. & died in Fulton Co. Ill. Their children were:

William married Alice Davis & Harriett married Edmond Davis Edmond & Alice were twins. Edmond was my G.G.Grandfather and Alice was the G.G.Grandmother of John'i Cherny of Ancestry Inc. She sent me every thing on this line with all the documentation as I said I just gave you a quick outline. If you want to next library trip look for "Ancestry's Guide to Research, case histories in American Genealogy" by Johni Cerny & Arlene Eakle. It is loaded with Hoffman information on this line, you can imagine the war hoop I let out when I found this book. Johni was just as excited as I was when I contacted her as she had no information on Edmonds descendants (they all went to Oregon). Anyway she sent me ALL the information on the Davis line from Immigrant to present time with all the Wills, everything. I was just flabbergasted. Do you have any idea of how hard it would be to trace a Davis line ? I had just kept shoving back for later and here I was handed it all on a silver platter. The first & last time I had a break like that but why be greedy [Smile] If you can find any connection let me know & I will fill in the blanks. One more thing this name is sometimes written "Houghman".

Additional sources of information that have been very helpful are Family Tree Maker's Ohio Marriage Index (CD #400) and the Illinois Statewide Marriage Index on the internet. Some of the genealogy descendant’s data I possess on the John and Mary Bland Huffman family was collected by Mrs. Lorene Fort of Kansas - I have not verified all of it. In fact, I do not know the source of the "Bland" maiden name provided for the wife of John Huffman. Thanks to cousin, Terry Huddle, I have several breakthroughs on the Huffman line that keep me busy.
An unconfirmed lead on the internet has the first Huffman of record in the United States as Valentine Huffman, of Germany. My particular branch follows from his reported son, George. As a result of leads provided in Reverend William Huffman’s biography and the book “Ancestry’s Guide to Research” (which refers to deeds documenting the transfer of land from George and Elizabeth Huffman to their sons, John, Isaac, Jacob, Sampson, and Abraham) – I begin my early research documentation with records from Butler County, Ohio.

REV. WILLIAM HUFFMAN[11], a minister of the denomination of United Brethren, and one of the early pioneers of Miami County, was born in Butler County, Ohio, July 1, 1815. When sixteen years of age moved with his parents to Indiana, where he was brought up on a farm. He became a member of the Church of the United Brethren in early manhood and began preaching in 1843 in Illinois. Remained in that State six and one half years in his holy calling. In June, 1857, he came to Miami County, Kan and located near Marysville. In January, 1859, he moved to Miami Township, where he has eighty acres of land, on Section 23. He has been the local minister of his church of this township for many years. He was married in Indiana, in January, 1835, to Miss Alice, daughter of Miller and Rachel Davis. Mrs. Huffman was born in North Carolina. They had a family of fifteen children, ten sons and five daughters, of whom seven sons and three daughters are now living. Mrs. Huffman died in 1860. Mr. Huffman married again in September, 1863 to Mrs. Lucy E. Nichols. Mr. H. has held various positions of public honor and trust. He was a member of the Kansas Legislature of 1867-68; was Justice of the Peace four terms; has been Township Treasurer three years and is the present incumbent.
1898 United Brethren Ministry Biographical Sketch Record[12]
Was Presiding Elder for 10 years, Member of Gen. Conference 1889, 1893, 1897. Trustee of Lane University 25 years, Pres., Board of Trustees 13 years. My father, still living, has been a UB minister for fifty years. I have two sons and one son-in-law in the ministry; all members of Kansas Conference. Served three years in the Rebellion in Co. H, 22nd Iowa Infantry. Was a prisoner of war six months at Tyler, Texas. Was in the Campaign at Vicksburg under Grant and the Virginia Campaign under Sheridan. Was honorably discharged as 3rd Sergeant of Co H. August 1865.

Andrew J. Huffman, farmer, Section 13, Township 18, Range 24, P.O. New Lancaster. Mr. Huffman was born in Parke County, Indiana, November 2, 1836; moved to Illinois with his parents when ten years of age; eight years later to Iowa, and in the fall of 1865 to Kansas. He located on his present farm of 186 acres in 1869. He was married in Benton County, Iowa in 1858 to Margaret I., daughter of Joseph and Margaret Humphrey. Mrs. Huffman was born in Pennsylvania. They have four children, two sons and two daughters – Mortimer G., Mary L., wife of C. Bodenhammer, of Miami Township, Clara J., wife of John Woldridge of Cass County, Missouri, and Clyde Sherman.
Description:
The Gene Pool was created while gathering genealogical data for use in the study of human genetics and disease. Compiling data for genetic research does not require the same type of documentation as traditional genealogical research. The genes themselves verify relationships and qualify or disqualify a person from a particular study. Citing the source of every genealogical fact in the electronic gene pool was deemed unnecessary and cost prohibitive by medical researchers. Millions of individual records were created from birth, marriage and death records; obituaries; probate records; books of remembrance; family histories; genealogies; family group sheets; pedigree charts; and other sources. The records collected that did not fit a specific study became the project's "by-products" and were schedule to be discarded. After viewing the quality of the source material used to create the gene pool and despite the absence of cited documentation, the electronic rights to the data were purchased, rather than see it destroyed.
Extended Description:
Thousands of families are known to be present in the database, containing 20 million names in 5 million records. This data covers the entire U.S. for a wide expanse of years. At a minimum, each record contains an individual's name, date and place of birth, and the name of his or her father. A complete record will contain the following information for an individual:
Name, Date and Place of Birth, Date and Place Married, Date and Place of Death, Name of Spouse, Name of Father, Name of Mother,
Use this database as a finding tool, just as you would any other secondary source.
When you find the name of an ancestor listed, confirm the facts in original sources, such as birth, marriage, and death records, church records, census enumerations, and probate records for the place where the even took place.

The FULTON DEMOCRATE of Fulton County, IL reported a death record in their 6 Dec 1899 paper. The record was of John Huffman, who died 3 Dec 1899 at the age of 75 (possible brother of Harriet Huffman Davis).

Rev. William Huffman was born in Butler County, Ohio, and died at his home in New Lancaster, Kansas, Sept. 16, 1900; aged 85 years, 2 months, and 16 days. In 1831 he with his father moved to Indiana, in 1845 to Illinois, thence to Iowa in 1851, and in 1857 he moved to Miami County, Kan. His home, has been in this county for forty-three years.
In 1843, in the state of Indiana, he entered upon the Christian life, and soon after his conversion took up the work of the ministry, preaching continuously as health would permit. He preached his last sermon on the fifth Sunday of last April. He was the first to preach the gospel in this community, and organized the first Sunday School in 1859. He was a member of the Kansas State legislature in 1867 and 1868. There is no means at hand for ascertaining the number of persons he received into the United Brethren Church, but undoubtedly it will reach into the thousands. His life was an open book, nothing hidden or dark; his light continually shone. Even when suffering great bodily affliction he could rejoice. He was loved and respected by all that knew him. He was married to Alice Davis in Indiana in 1835, and to them were born ten sons (one of whom is Rev. G. M. Huffman, D. D., of the Kansas Conference) and six daughters. There are fifty-seven living grandchildren, one of whom is Rev. N. H. Huffman, our missionary at Ponce, Puerto Rico. He buried the wife of his youth in June, 1860. He was married in 1863 to Mrs. Lucy Nichols, who survives him. Serving faithfully in the gospel ministry for more than fifty-five years, he fell asleep in Jesus, and well may it be said of him, “Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth; Yea saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labors and their works do follow him.”

Death of Edmund Davis[13]
Edmund Davis, one of the old and highly respected citizens of Medford, of which place he has been a resident for the past 15 years, died at the residence of his son, Wm. Davis corner of B and 9th streets, on Tuesday, Feb. 24th, 1903.
Mr. Davis was a native of North Carolina, having been born in that state on March 10, 1818. At the age of nineteen he was married to Miss Harriet Huffman, who, after a companionship of nearly sixty-six years, still survives him.
Twelve children were born as a result of this union, nine of whom are still living. Soon after their marriage the young couple emigrated to the then almost unknown west and settled in Illinois, where Mr. Davis engaged in stock and farming business, which occupations he followed through successive removals to Iowa, Kansas, and California-ever trending westward-until finally, fifteen years ago, they settled in Jackson county, where the venerable couple have since lived, passing peacefully the evening of life, and awaiting the summons which must inevitably come to all.
The funeral took place on Wednesday afternoon, services held by Revs. Moore and Crandall, and the interment took place in Odd Fellows cemetery.
Of the nine surviving children, two reside in Missouri, one in Iowa, three in Kansas, three-W. M. and G. L. Davis and Mrs. J. T. Eads-are residents of Medford, G. L. being the youngest in the family.
MRS. HARRIET DAVIS DEAD
Mrs. Harriet Davis died at the home of her son, William Davis, in this city, at seven o'clock last night, aged 88 years, 11 months and 12 days.
Deceased was a native of Ohio and was born in 1820. She came to Medford with her husband 21 years ago and has since been a resident of this city. Her husband, Edmond Davis, died six years ago and was 88 years of age. Deceased had been a member of the United Brethren church for over sixty years. There were twelve children born to her, and these nine are still living, they being Mrs. J.T. Eads and William Davis of this city; G.L. Davis of Jacksonville, Mrs. Angeline Lambertson, and Mrs. J.E. Anderson and John Davis of Minneapolis, Kansas; Mrs. G.W. Sheeks of Moravia, Iowa; Mrs. A. C. Chadd of Washburn, Missouri, and Mrs. T.E. Commons of Arora, Missouri.
Funeral services will be held in the Baptist church in this city on Saturday at two o'clock p.m., Revs. Hall and Goode officiating. Interment will be made in Odd Fellows' cemetery.
After a long, busy and useful life she died as she had lived-honored, trusted and loved. She reared her own monument while she lived in the hearts of all who knew her. Her life was completed, if work all done and well done constitutes completion. Her Christian life was beautiful from its beginning to its close, and through all the vicissitudes and sorrows she met in the way, her faith in God never wavered. With the eye of faith one could see at the sunset of this memorable April day an invisible hand wave a signal, and a voice of softest accent on the evening breeze, announce that the gates were open and that God's angels were waiting to escort her in. and with this passing went the worshiping love of a family of dutiful, respecting children and friends.

POTTINGER 10 Nov 1886 in OTTAWA CO, KS, daughter of ALECK POTTINGER and MARY POTTINGER*. She was born Nov 1870 in OHIO, and died Aft. 1910 in res. JACKSON CO, OR (Medford).

[3] Edmund Davis reported occupation as Tavern Keeper. There are numerous court dockets on record in Fulton County that have city officials fining Edmund for illegally selling liquor.
[4] The FULTON DEMOCRATE of Fulton County, IL reported a death record in their 6 Dec 1899 paper. The record was of John Huffman, who died 3 Dec 1899 at the age of 75 (possible brother of Harriet Huffman Davis).
[5] Joseph Paul was the father of Catherine Paul who was the wife of James Huffman – Mary Bishop Paul’s mother, Catherine Bishop, is also living in the household.
[6] Elizabeth Davis Huffman, sister of Edmond Davis who married Harriet Huffman and Alice Davis who married William Huffman – all children of John and Mary Huffman and Miller and Rachael Davis.

[9] Edmund and Harriet Davis' son, John, married Elizabeth Louisa Stewart in 1861 Appanoose County, Iowa. Elizabeth was the daughter of Joseph Franklin and Rebecca Coffel Stewart. By 1870, the John and Elizabeth Davis family were living in Monroe County, Iowa. Some time before January 1872, my direct Davis and Stewart ancestry left Iowa and began again in Ottawa County, Kansas. John and Elizabeth Stewart Davis remained in Ottawa County, KS until some time after the 1900 Kansas census - then they followed Edmund and Harriet Davis to Medford, Oregon. John Davis died in Medford, in 1913. Twenty years later, Elizabeth Stewart Davis died in Jackson, County, Oregon. John and Elizabeth's son, Joseph Edmund, remained in Ottawa County, KS. Joseph Edmund Davis married Iona Crosby in 1886 Ottawa County, KS. Iona was the daughter of Glockus Parker and Mary Ann Thompson Crosby. Glockus and his father, Ezra Crosby, were doctors during the Civil War. Joseph died in 1933 Ottawa County. Around 1937, Iona remarried to Andrew Staley. Iona died in 1946 Ottawa County - where she is buried with Joseph in the Highland Cemetery of Minneapolis, Kansas. Joseph Edmund and Iona Crosby Davis were the parents of my great-grandfather, Elzy Ray Davis.

Harriet Huffman Davis died 29 April 1909 on her 88th year, 11th month, and 12th day. Harriet and Edmund are buried in Medford, Oregon's Eastwood I. O. O. F. Cemetery.
