The founder of the Kincaid family is said to be William, son of Arthur. The Kyncade lands of Edinburgh, Scotland reverted by charter to the family as a dowry of marriage, around 1280. Off and on, for several centuries, Kincaid’s held the position of "Constable of Edinburgh Castle" and participated within the circles of Scottish political history; including blood and personal ties to the "thorn in the side of England", Robert Bruce. Additionally, they were linked to aristocracy as descendants of the Earl of Huntington, who was the third son of David, the first king of Scotland. The Kincaid association to the political antagonism of the British throne continued until their eventual flight to America around 1716.
Alexander Kincaid, second son of James (Laird of Kincaid), was born about 1670 and was a pharmacist in Edinburgh, Scotland. When Charles Stuart attempted to retake his throne in December of 1715 (Jocobite rebellion), and was defeated in Stirlingshire, four of the Jacobite sons of Alexander followed him and fought under Cluny McPherson, where they were captured during retreat from battle. All of this took place within a few miles of Kincaid and it was not long before word was received and efforts began to obtain their release. The wives of the two married brothers, Samuel and George, were taken to Glasgow with some of their furniture; they were met there shortly by the four brothers, Samuel, George, James, and Robert, after they were spirited out of the English camp, and all the family members were put on board ship. They came to Virginia, fairly well supplied with "siller" and on the advice of their uncle David (son of James, who fled Jocobite persecution previously) settled in Augusta County - leaving behind their youngest brother, Alexander, who became a noted printer in Edinburgh. The first records I have of the Kincaid family in America are the wills of John and David Kincaid, descendants of James (Laird of Kincaid).[1]
Admittedly, there are a lot of variations on the Kincaid data within this text and much of the pre-1850 information I have comes from internet sources which are suspect. I have tried to sift through the great amount of information to come up with common denominators. There are discrepancies that will need to be corrected once the family relationships are proven, but…not to include what I have could leave out valuable clues for someone else. A biographical synopsis of my Kincaid’s, on microfilm available through the LDS Church (“Assortment of Kincaid Papers", by Clan Kincaid International), leads me to the region of Greenbrier and Fayette County, Virginia where my own research picks up.
One thing I noted when looking through numerous Kincaid genealogy files was the conflicting counties specified for birth/death locations on the same individuals. This is explained in a book called, "GAULEY BRIDGE, the Town-and its First Church", by Lyle M. Blackwell. Gauley Bridge was first part of Orange County, Virginia, in 1734. In 1738, more counties were formed, this time Gauley Bridge falling into Augusta County. Throughout the years the town became part of Botetourt, Fincastle, Montgomery, Greenbrier, Kanawha, and finally, Fayette County, West Virginia. A person needs to know what time frame, and the specific area, in order to accurately determine the appropriate county for finding records they require. Another very frustrating part of researching the Kincaid’s in Virginia and West Virginia pertains to deciphering the vast number of intermarriages (cousin to cousin) among the Kincaid families.
The Kincaid’s were very populous throughout the region of my research (there is even a town called Kincaid)—it is quite a task to sort through them all. I still have a way to go to fill in the holes that I have among the families and clarify relationships from the various bits and pieces of data I possess. One of the dangers of having a lot of unplaced information is the temptation of placing facts where they seem to fit best in a genealogical file. There are several unconnected marriages that I could find a place for in my file but without collaboration from other sources, such as a will or bible records, the data will have to remain on its own. Some documents and records I have contain obvious mistakes but their value is still important since I can get useful information from them. Many of the Kincaid stories reported in historical accountings concern the line of cousins that descend from John (son of John and Ann Graham Kincaid) and Elizabeth Gillespie Kincaid.[2]
I continually run across conflicting information from Kincaid documentation, one example concerns the parentage of my fifth great-grandfather, Samuel Kincaid (1765 – 1847). A descendant synopsis reported by the Clan Kincaid International has John and Ann Graham as Samuel's parents—while many internet sources show Thomas and Hannah Tincher as his parents. I have started my own genealogy file in this documentation at Thomas Kincaid and Hannah Tincher—there is other information available prior to this union but there are so many variations that I chose to stick to the most consistently reported starting point.[3] The majority of Thomas’ descendants settled in Fayette County, West Virginia where I focus most of my personal research.
Samuel Kincaid, reported son of Thomas and Hannah Tincher, first married Mary Tincher on June 21, 1785, in Greenbrier County, Virginia. Mary died some time before Samuel’s second marriage to Hulda Osborne in 1802—my own ancestry is from the union of Samuel and Hulda Osborne Kincaid. Samuel married for a third time to Diane Ewing, in 1828. Additionally, Samuel’s family is confusing because, based on what I can glean out of internet sources, Samuel had two sons named Thomas, and two sons named Samuel (which is not likely).
Around 1814, my fourth great-grandfather, James "one-eyed Jimmy" Mathias Kincaid, was born to Samuel and his second wife, Hulda Osborne. I first found James in the 1850 Fayette County, Virginia census. James is a widower with his family from his first wife, Elizabeth Harrah. The records on James Kincaid’s marriages are a little confused due to the fact that it appears that two of his four wives were named Elizabeth—some internet sources show Elizabeth Harrah as his third wife instead of his first wife. The 1850 Fayette County, Virginia census raises a few questions concerning some of the information I have on James Kincaid’s second marriage to Sarah Martin. My third great-grandmother, Hulda Jane Kincaid, was reported to have been born in April 1850 (given in 1900 census and on death certificate); the accuracy of her birth date is questionable since she does not show up in the August 1850 census. Hulda's mother is reported to be Sarah Martin, but James Mathias Kincaid does not appear to have a wife at the time of the 1850 census. According to Greenbrier Co, VA records, James Kincaid applied for a marriage license on 11 Oct 1852 to marry Sarah Jane Martin. I recorded a number of Martin families in the region that have a “Sarah” in them—hoping to locate Sarah prior to her marriage to James Kincaid. I included James Kincaid's neighbors, Thomas and Elizabeth Harra because there is a possibility that this Elizabeth may be a future wife to James. Another big question arises seeing a much older Hulda daughter already living in the James Kincaid 1850 household; according to the Will of James Kincaid, he had two daughters named Hulda (this relationship may not be totally accurate if you consider the fact that James also had a half-sister with the same name and similar age.)
The 1860 Fayette County, Virginia census shows the James Kincaid family and many of his cousins from the James Gillespie Kincaid line. James is married to his third wife, Elizabeth, by this time. James’s daughter, Hulda Jane Kincaid (the younger) was born about 1852 (conflicts with her reported 1850 birth date). Apparently, Sarah Martin Kincaid, second wife of James and mother of Huldah Jane, had died prior to 1860, but, I have not located the death record. The 1880 Fayette County, West Virginia census is the last record I have of James Kincaid and his fourth wife, Irinda. James "One-eyed Jimmy" died in 1890; his will was probated 8 Oct 1890.
In December 1867, Hulda Jane Kincaid, daughter of "One-eyed Jimmy", married James W. Ennis in Fayette County, W.VA. James was the son of Sherrod and Esther Crookshanks Ennis. I continued to track James and Hulda Kincaid Ennis, until their deaths. James Ennis died in Lawton (Fayette County), W.VA on December 5, 1923; Hulda died in 1938—they are both buried in the Ennis Cemetery at Meadow Bridge (Fayette County). James and Hulda Ennis were the parents of my great-great-grandmother Susan Mary Ennis.
In 1897, Susan Mary Ennis married Sanford Samuel Grigsby in Fayette County, West Virginia. Sanford was the son of Charles and Annie Elizabeth Ailstock Grigsby of Millboro, Bath County, Virginia. Susan died in 1902 Kanawha County, West Virginia shortly after the birth of her third child, Mary A. Grigsby; Sanford died in the same county, in 1946. The oldest child of Sanford and Susan Ennis Grigsby, Forrest Leonard Grigsby, was my great-grandfather.

Clan Kincaid International - "Assortment of Kincaid Papers" synopsis
Alexander Kincaid (b. ca1670) was a pharmacist of Edinburgh Scotland and the father of several sons who emigrated to the colonies and settled in Pennsylvania and Virginia. Most Kincaids are the descendants of Samuel,John and James who were the sons of John and Ann Graham Kincaid, who in their later years lived on Indian Creek in Greenbrier Co., Va (now Monroe Co., WV). James settled at Grassy Meadows and has numerous descendants in Fayette Co. Samuel, who was married four times, in 1795 married a Miss Tinchner. He owned land near Meadow Bridge where many of his descendants still live. John Kincaid, Jr. (b. 1760) was born in what is now Amherst Co., WV. His father John, Sr., owned land on Indian Creek. John married Elizabeth Gallespie in 1782, in Greenbrier Co., WV. She was the daughter of James Gallespie, Jr. They were the parents of sixteen children. Several generations of descendants are given.[93]
Gauley Bridge, of course, was not known by that name before there was a bridge. As a matter of fact it was called Kincaid's Ferry after a rather fiery individual who had operated a ferry across the Gauley here for some little time. Naturally the erection of this brand new bridge put Mr. Kincaid out of the ferry business in no time flat, and he was recorded as stating that he would be very happy if the infernal thing would burn down.
On the night of July 11, 1826, someone set fire to the Gauley River bridge, and for a while it looked as if our Mr. Kincaid were back in the ferry business. Unfortunately, there was some talk that he might have had something to do with the fire, and he was hailed into court and tried for arson. Only circumstantial evidence could be presented linking him to the crime, but it was good enough for the jury, and Mr. Kincaid was duly tried and convicted for arson. He was sentenced to the Virginia State Penitentiary forthwith and sent to Richmond to serve his sentence. All this did not replace the bridge, however, and for the time being, another ferryman had to be employed and he was paid one-third of all the fares he collected. The replacement of the bridge was not effected for two years but by 1828 another one was built and the ferryman dismissed. This bridge stood for twenty-one years.[94]

Fayette County Origination
In 1738, Frederick County, Virginia (North) and Augusta County, Virginia (South) was formed west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
In 1769, Augusta County, Virginia was further split and the Northern part kept the same name while the southern part of it became Botetourt County.
In 1772, Botetourt was further divided at the Kanawha and New Rivers – the northwest remained Botetourt and the southwest was called Fincastle County.
In 1776, Fincastle was abolished and the counties of Kentucky, Washington and Montgomery were formed.
In 1777, Greenbrier was formed out of Botetourt County.
In 1788, Kanawha County was formed from Greenbrier and Montgomery Counties.
In 1806, Giles County was formed out of Montgomery County,
In 1818, Nicholas County was taken from Kanawha and Greenbrier Counties.
In 1824, Logan County was formed from parts of Giles and Kanawha Counties.
In 1831, Fayette County was formed from Kanawha, Nicholas, Greenbrier and Logan Counties. The part of Fayette that was Beckley was cut off to form Raleigh County in 1851. Another part of Fayette was cut off to become Summers County. Since 1831, Fayette County has had 5 courthouses.

We first hear of Kincaid in 1238 when a Galbraith obtained a charter for the Kincaid lands and held these lands for forty years. Then another family acquired a charter from Maldwin, fourth Earl of Lennox in 1284 for these same lands and this family took their surname from the lands thus acquired and this was the beginning of the family known as Kincaid.
The extension of the Kincaid lands were from the Glazert to the Kelwin. One of this family distinguished himself for gallant conduct against the English and for his valiant services against the English in recovering Edinburgh Castle in the time of Edward the First, he was made constable of Edinburgh Castle. He had the castle on the Kincaid Shield granted as an honorable augmentation to his armorial bearings—the motto on the shield, “I’ll defend.”
The founder of the Kincaid family was a descendant of the Earl of Huntington, who was the third son of David the First, King of Scotland. He was a first cousin of Robert Bruce and was with Robert Bruce when he defeated Edward, first King of England.
From 1668 were the trying times of Scotland and, during this time, many of this family moved into the northern part of Ireland. About 1715, some of the family from Edinburgh came to Pennsylvania and settled at Chester (then known as Upland). In 1745, four sons of Alexander Kincaid came to Pennsylvania and, in 1746, they moved to Virginia where each of them bought land. One of these brothers was killed by Indians in 1756 and his wife and children were taken captive by Indians, but were returned later under the terms of the Bognets Treaty. John, a son of the oldest of these brothers, was married and lived for. a while in Albemarle County, Virginia. They raised a large family. One of the sons, named John Jr., served in the Revolutionary War. He was married in Greenbrier County in 1782 to Elizabeth Galispie. To this union was born fourteen children, one of whom was named James Galispie.
James Galispie Kincaid married Mary Trilt, a daughter of Peter Trilt who served in the Revolutionary War. James Kincaid Sr. came to Loup Creek between 1831 and 1834. He had come from Roaring River, Tennessee and about 1812 had settled near the mouth of Cane Branch, Kanawha County, West Virginia, until coming to Loup Creek.
In 1836, James Kincaid, Sr. purchased the Lypens place of 193 acres at Page, Route 61, near Oak Hill and lived until his death in 1852 on the site of the Page depot. Soon after his arrival, James Kincaid, Sr. was appointed surveyor by the county court and charged with the duty of keeping the lower end of the road in repair, being assisted by the residents of that area. The family of James Galispie Kincaid, Sr. and Mary Trilt Kincaid consisted of John, Preston, Pleasant, Ruth, Miriam, Cynthia, and James Galispie Kincaid, Jr.
James Galispie Kincaid, Jr. married Margaret Brogan. He ran a store at Deepwater in partnership with William Taylor. He was known as “Squire Jim,” having served some 16 years as Justice of the Peace. In those days, that constituted the County Court. James C. Kincaid, Jr. was a member of this court when the Civil War broke out. He resigned from the thoroughly secessionist court and took charge of a fleet of federal Yankee supply boats on the Kanawha River and served during the Civil War as a Captain. He represented Fayette County in the legislature of 1887- 1889. The Federal Census of 1850 showed James Kincaid, Jr.—31 years of age, Margaret—29, Eunice—l1, Kellis—8, Perry—7, James—6, Jane— 3, and Hans—8 months.
Kellis Kincaid, son of James C. and Margaret Kincaid, married Lucinda Johnson, daughter of John and Mary Ann Johnson. He built an attractive two-story residence just below Open Fork on Loup Creek at Kincaid. It was shaded in front and rear by stately beeches. To this union was born ten children, including J. Perry, J. Eddie, Willis C., W.C. Emerson, A. J. Kincaid, Fred C., Laura, Anna, and Gillie Belle. Dewey Kincaid son of Eddie Kincaid. Wandaleen, Morris and Thelma children of Dewey.[95]

One of the largest, most influential, and best known families that settled in Fayette County were the Kincaid family. They were of Scotch-Irish descent, sturdy, industrious people, just the kind to make good in the rough rugged country they came to settle.
James Kincaid and Mary Tritt Kincaid, his wife, moved from old Virginia in the year 1807 and settled in Greenbrier County, near the present Monroe county line, and lived there about five years. Not being favorably impressed with the location they decided to move further on to the west. In the early spring of 1812, they gathered up their belongings, put them on pack horses, and driving their cows along, followed the trail over which Lewis' army had gone in 1774 until they reached Ansted, then following the course of the present road until they reached a beautiful bottom just below the mouth of Cane branch, and on the opposite side of the river from Gauley Junction, so here they stopped and took up their abode.
There were no houses there but nature had provided them a home by causing a large sycamore tree to decay for several feet up. The hollow in this Sycamore tree was large enough that you could turn inside of it with a rail eleven feet long; this being a nice place they took up their abode in the hollow of this giant sycamore tree. They cut out a hole on the front side of the tree for a door and a small hole on the rear for ventilation. They cut poles and made one large bed and trundle bed which was kept under the large one. In a year or so they built an additional room to this one made of round logs and this new room together with the hollow tree gave plenty of house room. They used the tree as a part of their house as long as they lived there. About the year 1840, James Kincaid bought a large tract of land from Andrew Likens and others and moved into a small log house on lower Loup creek, at what is now Page, the house standing almost on the same spot where the Page depot is now located. He lived here the remainder of his life.
James Kincaid and Mary Tritt Kincaid were the parents of seven children, four boys and three girls, as follows: John, Preston, Pleasant, Ruth, Miriam, Cynthia, and James G, several of whom were born while living in the old sycamore a mile above Gauley Bridge. Ruth Kincaid married Richard Woodrum. Richard and Ruth Woodrum were the parents of Caroline Woodrum who married Miles Johnson and became the mother of State Treasurer W. S. Johnson. John settled about a mile above his father on Loup creek. He was a farmer and Methodist preacher. Preston settled near where North Page now stands, and was a farmer, cattle raiser and lumberman. Pleasant lived several miles up Loop creek where he farmed and ran a grist and saw mill which was run by water power. James G., one of the children born in the sycamore, settled near Kincaid; he was a farmer, merchant and politician.[96] He was the first postmaster at that place. He was not an office seeker, but he and John were honored several times with positions in the county. The positions they held were given them as recognition of true merit as good, trustworthy citizens. James G. served as justice of the peace for 16 years; he was a member of the county court, he represented Fayette County in the legislature and often served the people in the capacity of school officer.
From these Kincaid families have come some of the best and most progressive and influential people of the county and state. They are real builders and have done their part in making their section of the county second to none.
The most cherished thing in the Kincaid family is an old family Bible, which was given James Gillespie Kincaid, Sr., by his father. This Bible is now in the fifth generation and is possessed by James Kincaid, of Page, West Virginia, who has a son, James, awaiting the death of his father to get possession of this old family Bible.
About forty years ago the home of James G. Kincaid was destroyed by fire and the only thing saved from the burning building was this old family Bible. It was brought out by Martha C. Kincaid, who entered the building after parts of it were falling in and at the risk of her life brought out the trunk containing this old Bible."[97]
Alexander Clarke Kincaid was born on his father’s farm on Anthony’s creek, Greenbrier county, Virginia, February 27, 1818. He died at Frankford, W. Va., December 6, 1893. He was a son of Colonel James Kincaid, who was born May 15, 1782, and died July 9, 1838. Colonel Kincaid represented Greenbrier county in the General Assembly in both branches, the State Senate and the House of Delegates. He fought in the Mexican war with the rank of colonel.
Phoebe Kincaid, his wife, was born April 15, 1795, and died January t6, 1858. She was a daughter of George and Margaret Kincaid, the latter being the sister of Major William Renick. Colonel James Kincaid was the son of Squire Samuel Kincaid, who was grandson of Alexander Kincaid, of Scotland. Squire Samuel Kincaid married a Miss Clarke, of eastern Virginia.
Dr. Clarke Kincaid was educated at the University of Virginia and was a practicing physician first in Braxton, then in Greenbrier and adjoining counties for more than forty years. He was a Blue Lodge Mason, a member of the Presbyterian church, and in active service during three years of the Civil war. Soon after the outbreak of the war he organized a company of cavalry, of which he was captain, who trained and marched from Summersville, Nicholas county, Virginia. He resigned this command when he was made an officer of ordnance by General Lee to supply armies of northwestern Virginia. When this was accomplished he joined the Albermarle Rangers, a company formed of young men from the University of Virginia. At the end of the third year he was honorably discharged and came home to his family. He married Maria Louisa Hamilton at Summersville, Va., October 31, 1847. She was a daughter of Colonel Robert and Fanny (Peebles) Hamilton, of Summersville, was born there on February 5, 1826, and died in Frankford, W. Va., February 17, 1894. Colonel Robert Hamilton was sheriff of Nicholas county and clerk of both courts until debarred by age from further service, when his son, Alexander Hamilton, took this office, which he held until his death at the age of 72 years.
To Dr. and Mrs. Kincaid seven children were born—Robert Alexander, James Renick, Fanny Bell, Phoebe Caroline, Laura Margaret, Mary Agnes, and Lucy Hamilton.
Robert Alexander Kincaid, a lawyer by profession living at Summersville, W. Va., married Mary Patton, of New Orleans. To this union seven children were born—Phola Hamilton, who married William Moore, a lawyer, of Lisbon, Ohio; Herbert Clarke, at this writing a captain in the medical corps of our army in France; Wallace Patton, a banker at Summersville; Robert Truslow, who died in childhood; Mary Louise, at home; James Baldwin, first lieutenant in the aviation with our army in France; and Ralph Templeton, at home.
James Renick Kincaid, M. D., graduate of Medical College of Virginia, married Alice White, daughter of Richard Dickson White, of near White Sulphur Springs, and practices his profession at Frankford, W. Va. Of this union there are four children—Mary Hamilton, Edith White, and Byrne Clarke, at home, and James Clarence, at Camp Lee in the service of his country.
(1) Fanny Bell Kincaid died at the age of six years;
(2) Phoebe Caroline Kincaid married J. R. Woodward, now deceased, and lives at Frankford;
(3) Laura Margaret Kincaid married Achilles Livesay, who lives one and one-half miles south of Frankford;
(4) Mary Agnes Kincaid died at nine years;
(5) Lucy Hamilton Kincaid married William Alexander Jameson of Philadelphia and lives at Bramwell, Mercer county, West Virginia, with their three children, William Alexander, Margaret Louise, and Edith Kincaid.[98]
A. Jennings Kincaid was born at Kincaid, Fayette County, October 18, 1879, the son of Kellis and Lucinda Johnson Kincaid. His grandfather was James Kincaid and his great grandfather was James Kincaid, an Irishman, who had a large amount of land at Page and Kincaid. The town of Kincaid was named form him.
In 1909, A. Jennings Kencaid was appointed deputy sheriff under Col. Bob Dickinson, who was sheriff of Fayette County.
In 1913, Mr. Kincaid established a home in Montgomery and in 1916 took over the management of the Montgomery-Cales Insurance Agency. In 1924 he reorganized the agency under the name of Mountain State Insurance Agency and worked as president and general manager.
In 1920 he was again appointed deputy sheriff under Sheriff C. C. Conley. In 1910 he worked as a member of the Board of Education of Kanawha District. He worked to get funds for the building of the Montgomery High School. He was a member of the City Council at Montgomery at the time the City Hall was built and the streets were paved.
Mr. Kincaid was married in 1897 to Anna Belle Johnson, who died in 1904. His second wife was Grace Thompson of Ronceverte, West Virginia.[99]
There are numerous Kincaids in Virginia and West Virginia. The particular lineage to which I am going to refer in this dissertation stems from James Kincaid who married Elizabeth Dean in 1786 in Bath County, Virginia.
Out of that marriage nine (9) children were born, one being Wilham McClannahan Kincaid, born September 18, 1805. His first marriage was to Sarah Hutsinpiller. They had four (4) children. Sarah passed away January 25, 1855.
One of those four children was Henry Dickinson Kincaid, born June 15, 1840. Henry married Sarah Elizabeth Hewitt. They were the parents of C. A. Kincaid.
C. A. Kincaid was my grandfather. He was one of five children all of which were born at Tanner, Gilmer County, West Virginia, Only three of those children survived.
C. A. Kincaid was born October 24, 1877, and was the youngest sibling. His brother, William Levi, was born April 6, 1872, and sister, Henrietta Virginia, was born September 1, 1875.
These three Kincaids married and all eventually migrated to Ansted, Fayette County.
Charles Anthony married Mary Ellen Alderson, daughter of George and Mary Mathews McClung Alderson, of Summersville. They had nine (9) children; Lucile, an unnamed infant, H. A. “Bill”, Mary Elizabeth, Ruth Woodrow, Phala Gertrude, Helen Coleman, C. A. Jr., and Eugenia May. C. A. started his adult working life teaching school. Later he owned and operated a grocery store on the “Old Minden Road” outside Oak Hill. After that he went into a plumbing and heating business known as “Oak Hill Plumbing and Heating”, which was later taken over by his son Bill, who had worked in the business since his graduation from high school, he was my father and changed the name of the plumbing business to “H. A. ‘Bill’ Kincaid Plumbing and Heating.”
Charles Anthony was Mayor of Oak Hill through 1919 and part of 1920. His and Mary Ellen’s children all married and moved to other places in and out of West Virginia, except Bill. He married Mabel Elizabeth Campbell of Lansing, West Virginia, and they continued living in the Kincaid Homeplace on Minden Avenue in Oak Hill. Their children were Olivene, George and Frank.
C. A. passed away May 4, 1953. His wife had preceded him in death by several years. H. A. Kincaid continued in the plumbing business until his death in 1961. His wife, Mabel, lived in the homeplace until her death in 1986. Their son, George Kincaid, still resides there. Olivene married Roger Bess of Glasgow, West Virginia, and lived in California for 32 years and they now live in Fayetteville, West Virginia. The youngest son of Bill and Mabel, Frank, passed away in 1987, leaving wife Mary Ellen Carter Kincaid and daughter Danielle Elizabeth, who live in Alexandria, Virginia.
At this writing all of the children of Charles Anthony and Mary Ellen Kincaid are deceased. Several grandchildren and great grandchildren are living and can be located in West Virginia, Virginia, South Carolina, Maryland, New Mexico, Nevada and California. [100]

CARING PERSONS OF SEVERAL YEARS AGO
A very valuable couple in the Graydon community were Daniel Augustus Kincaid, son of Thomas Kincaid and lsahelle Agnes Campbell Kincaid, born May 21, 1851 in the Hico community and Susan Minerva Kious Kincaid, daughter of Valentine and Sarah Skaggs Kious, born February 7, 1856 in the Hopewell area.
Daniel was a teacher in the Clifty area at early age and Susan was a pupil. Rev. I. C. Cavendish performed their marriage ceremony on Dec. 24, 1874, and they established their home near Hico, later buying property on the O’Possom Creek Road. Their daughters, Etha Agnes. born March 9, 1876, and Maymie Ophelia, born July 7, 1878, as well as a son, Ludwell Gaines Kincaid, were born at the Dogwood Ridge place near Hico. A second son, Frank Vickory Kincaid was born on June 11, 1890, near Graydon.
The couple and their children were active in the life of Good Hope Baptist Church. The farm land was productive and the family lived well. Daughters, Etha and Maymie became teachers; Ludwell Gaines Kincaid, was known as an industrious young man, but had poor health; died at the age of 24 years. The youngest son, Frank V., attended Free Union School and higher education at Mountain State Business School at Parkersburg.
The couple loved people; on the property was an everflowing spring of very cold red sulphur water which was a source of cold refreshment to wayfarers as it poured from a hollow gum log. Through the years the Kincaids maintained a park here before the day of established State Parks. Political barbecues, reunions, Sunday School picnics and an annual Old Folks Day were among special happenings there. During the 1930 water shortage, water was hauled as far as Oak Hill from this spring. A chinquapin orchard, also chestnuts, were enjoyed on these grounds.
Daughter Etha married Lyman T. McKnight and they raised their children in Ceres, California; daughter Maymie married Frank W. Hunt and their family grew up in the Graydon area; son Frank V. married Gertrude Stover; their daughters were Mary, Pauline and Mickey; and a second marriage to Effie Willis, with Francis, Doris and Frank Jr. reared in the Graydon area.
Susan M. Kincaid died August 1933; Daniel A Kincaid died Feb. 1940; they are buried at Good Hope Cemetery.[101]

The Chief
Dewey Sherman Kincaid, 1898- 1982, son of John Eddie Kincaid and Minnie Mae Saye, married Olna Laura Morris, in 1919, a school teacher from Ripley, WV. They had three children, Wandaleen Vera, Morris Sherman, and Thelma Lee. Dewey was one of eleven children, and the one who always stayed close to his parents. He was very family oriented, loved people, a great husband, father and son. He personified the inscription on the Kincaid Family Crest, “I’ll Defend.”
After working many years for his father in sawmills and road building, he then went to work for a mining company at Ingram Branch for a few years as a motorman and electrician. He was in a mine accident, where he lost some fingers of his left hand. He left the mine and opened a store and ice cream parlor at Ingram Branch, with his brother, Willis Kincaid. They finally gave away their profits and closed the stores. Dewey’s children brought all their friends from school at recess to be given treats. Needless to say, the children hated to see the end of the perfect “set-up”.
Dewey then joined the Police Force in Oak Hill. He loved police work and rapidly became Police Chief. In World War II, he lost his only son, Morris. This was a terrible blow to him and his wife, Olna.
Dewey loved people, especially little children, and excelled in his job to protect them. The children always referred to him as “Chiefy”. He gave them a lot of attention because he believed it was important to have children know that policemen are their friends and protectors. After years of police work, he had a severe heart attack and was forced to retire from the Police Force. He sold real estate for awhile, such as houses in mining camps that had stopped mining. He did enjoy it, but his health forced him to retire from this endeavor also.
After he retired, he loved working with wood in his workshop. Many folks in the area have beautiful carts and things he made before he lost his sight.
Dewey’s generosity was well known. He would give the shirt off his back if someone needed help in any way. For the last ten years of his life, his sight was reduced to shadow and light. However, through all the adversities he kept his sense of humor. Dewey loved to laugh and he could laugh at himself most of all. This actually helped him live for 84 years.
When he died, he left a rich legacy. Not material things, but love, honesty, integrity, common sense, and love of law and order. These were the gifts from a brave and good man.
The “Chief” will always remain in the memories and hearts of all who knew him.[102]

Mr. John Edward Kincaid 1872- 1956… one of the builders of Fayette County.
Mr. Kincaid was called “Uncle Eddie” by those who loved him.
Before our highway system came under the supervision of the State Road Commission, Mr. Kincaid was the head of our County road system. He was a most capable road builder who used prison labor.
The son of Kellis and Loucinda (Johnson) Kincaid, he was born and raised at Ingram Branch, Fayette County.
He married Minnie May Saye and they had eleven children.
He was in the saw mill business; he furnished the lumber and constructed the coal town of Beards Fork on lower Loup Creek. After this construction, Mr. Kincaid went to work for the State, where he supervised, built, and maintained more roads than any other man in the county. Some of the roads were Route 61, Saturday and Sunday Roads, which it is rumored, that the names of these roads evolved from the fact that Mr. Kincaid started in on Saturday, and came out on Sunday. He supervised sections of the Midland Trail, road at Elk River, roads from Kanawha to Braxton County, and many more. He was consulted on road problems even after retirement.
In addition to his numerous enterprises, he was a Gentleman Farmer. He was a good boss. He never drove a car; always had a driver who was his bookkeeper and secretary. He never shaved himself; he was a real Southern Gentleman in every way.
Mr. Kincaid loved people and to entertain them. The ladies were hard at work baking, and preparing food for one of the many parties, when he was heard to say, “It’s nothing to get these parties together.”
He had a wonderful sense of humor. In his youth, he and his friends played pranks on each other for entertainment. Until he died, he loved telling these stories. He could always laugh at himself.
A friend said, “Uncle Eddie, you are the most generous man I know”. He answered, ”Probably the most selfish, you see, I want to give while I am alive, so I can see the happiness it brings.”
Kind and caring, a great husband, father, and grandfather, an unforgettable person.
Mr. Kincaid was one of an illustrious group to whom Fayette Countians are indebted.[103]

Moves to Lewis County
My great grandfather, Tom Kincaid, known as “Mountain Tom,” was born in Fayette County about 1795, married Mary “Polly” Withrow, and had as many as 12 children. When he was over 50 years-old, about 1849, he abandoned his family and ran away to Lewis County with Lucinda Claypool from the next mountain. There they raised three children, my grandfather, Henry Kincaid, and his two sisters Susannah and Sarah Catherine.
During two years of research, ending in early 1991, we identified 2,073 direct descendants of Tom and Lucinda, starting with their three children born 1850-1854, and a book on the Lewis County family was published in April 1991 (“Kincaid Claypool Descendants”). These 2,073 descendants, with 409 different surnames, now live in 35 states from Alaska to Florida. Among the more common names, besides Kincaid, are Collins, Pugh, Silman, Shaver, Cogar, Simons, Cowger, Forinash, Stull, Chidester, Humphrey, Lawson, Jordan, Brown, Cobb, Curtis, and Snider.
Now that we have the descendants of Mountain Tom’s second family catalogued, we are planning to do the same for his first family in Fayette County. The task seems far greater because there were probably four times as many children in the first family, born about a generation earlier, between 1816-1833. A group of interested descendants of this family is now being formed to work on the project, aimed at publishing a companion volume.
We are not absolutely sure of the names of his first family children, but we think they included boys William, George Washington, Manser, Harvey, Frank, Andrew, John, Thomas, and Levi, and girls Lissie, Alice, and Mary Catherine. Anyone descended from these children of Tom and Polly, or anyone with pertinent information about them, is urged to contact me or the Genealogical Society of Raleigh and Fayette Counties.[105]

He was married to Isabella Agnes Campbell, daughter of Daniel and Catherine Campbell by Allen Wood, Minister, on February 21, 1850. Thomas Kincaid, Jr. served as a trustee of .Good Hope Baptist Church, Graydon.

Kincaid was married to Eliza A. Townsend Jones on April 10, 1875. Their children included Artie J., Missouri, Esther V., Hester, Thomas E., Ota L., Ida B., Minnie and twins.
