It took a trip to Topeka to finally get a breakthrough on my McCafferty line. I did not know for sure who were the parents of my great-great Grandfather, George Lafe McCafferty, or when and where George McCafferty died. The roadblock ended when I located several obituaries at the Shawnee County Public Library in Topeka - they have an excellent obituary index, up to 1920, for the microfilms of the Topeka State Journal. From the obituaries, I was able to locate the graves of George and his wife, Nellie Walker McCafferty, and George's parents, John and Mary.

The information I have on the McCafferty line begins with my third great-grandfather, John McCafferty. From his obituary and death certificate, it is reported that he was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on October 18, 1829. In an attempt to locate him and his family in 1850 PA, I recorded all the McCafferty names I could find in Allegheny County. PA.

I could not find John in the 1850 census - he was either missed by the census or hadd left the area. I recorded numerous McCafferty families in the Pittsburg area in hopes of one day making a connection to John. The Pittsburgh McCafferty families appear to be recent immigrants to America – John’s parents are reportedly from Scotland. The Allegheny city families could be my line (they report being from Ireland), but I need to do further research to prove a connection.

The first sign of John McCafferty I find is in the 1860 Census of Van Buren County, Iowa. John McCafferty married Mary Ann Burrow in 1857. Mary Ann was the daughter of William and Jane Burrow. According to the death certificate of Mary Burrow McCafferty, her mother’s maiden name was Mirny (the spelling of this name is up for debate because it was hard to read in the certificate). Mary’s parents remained in Union TWP, Van Buren County, Iowa until their deaths. I still need documentation proving their death dates.

By the time of the 1880 census report, John and Mary[1] were living in Douglas County, Kansas. At some point, John and Mary moved from Douglas to Shawnee County, KS. I found John for the last time in 1900 Topeka, Kansas. I last found his widow, Mary Burrow McCafferty in 1920 living with her son, Reuben, in Jefferson County, Kansas (just before her death in December of that year).

George and Nellie Walker McCafferty married around 1890 - I have been unable to locate a marriage record, or a census record that has Nellie with her parents. I recorded the Walker families around Kansas in hopes of one day making a connection to her line.

Bridget McCafferty (abt 1827- 1908)[18]

Mrs. Bridget McCafferty, 80 years of age, died at her home, 200 Kansas avenue, Saturday night of a complication of troubles. The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock from the Church of the Assumption.

John McCafferty (1829 – 1915)

John McCafferty, age 84, died this morning at the home of his son, R.J. McCafferty, in Seabrook. The funeral will be held at 10:30 o'clock tomarrow morning from the Seabrook Congregational church. Internment will be in Mount Hope cemetery. Mr. McCafferty lived for many years in Quinton Heights and is known to all the residents of that district. He has lived in Kansas for 30 years. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Lizzie Wycoff; two sons, R.J. McCafferty and G.L. McCafferty, all of whom live near Topeka. Mr. McCafferty was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., October 18, 1829.

Reuben J. McCafferty (1862 – 1950)

G.L. McCafferty of 2616 Central Park has received word of the death of his brother, Reuben McCafferty, 88, in Omaha. Services were held there Wednesday, and body will be brought to Topeka for burial in Mount Hope cemetery. Mr. McCafferty was a retired farmer in the Seabrook area before leaving Topeka about 30 years ago.

Nellie Walker McCafferty (1872 – 1908)[19]

Mrs. N.M. McCafferty, aged 36 years, wife of G.L. McCafferty, died at her home on the Burlingame road at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon of consumption, after an illness of seven months. The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock Friday morning from the residence. The services will be conducted by the Rev. Mrs. McKinstry of the Christian Science church. Internment will be in Foster's cemetery.

Gladys L. McCafferty Garoutte (1892 – 1985)

Mrs. Gladys L. Tenpenny Garoutte, 93, Oskaloosa, died Sunday, Sept. 22, at a Topeka hospital. She was born July 13, 1892, at Belvue, the daughter of Lafe and Nellie Walker McAferty. She spent most of her life in Jefferson County but also lived in Topeka and 18 years at Goodland.

Mrs. Garoutte was a member of the United Methodist Church and Order of Rebekahs, both of Goodland; and of Rebekah Lodge No. 747 at Oskaloosa.

She was married to Taylor Tenpenny in February 1930, at Perry. He died Dec. 14, 1954.

She married Lenard Garoutte in November 1960, at Goodland. He died Jan. 6, 1979.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Avis Cowhick, Topeka, and Mrs. Ruth Smith, Rustin, Calif., four sons, William D. Grabow, Silver Bay, Minn., Eugene Grabow, Palm Springs, Calif., Robert Grabow, Ventura, Calif., and Jerry Tenpenny, Ferrelview, Mo.; a sister, Mrs. Micki Palmer, in California; 17 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Hampton-Barret Funeral Home, Oskaloosa. Burial will be in Underwood Cemetery at Williamstown. Mrs. Garoutte will lie in state from 10 a.m. today until the service hour at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Oskaloosa Public Library.

[1] John’s obituary reports her maiden name as McCall – I have not located a marriage record

[2] None of these McCafferty’s have been connected to John McCafferty b. 1828 in Pittsburg, PA, at this time. Many of the family names are familiar but that is the only circumstantial evidence I have. It appears that John McCafferty had moved away from Pittsburg by this time.

[3] This family the closest to a possible lead to John McCafferty – I need to located them in later census records to track down further clues.

[4] First census record of Mary Burrow McCafferty – wife of John McCafferty. Polly is a twin.

[5] William and Jane Burrow son, Allen Burrow, moved on to St. Clair County, Missouri where he is found in the 1870 census (Anderson Burrow followed on to Missouri by 1880). Following the 1870 census, John and Mary Burrow McCafferty were found in 1880 Kansas.

[6] This is the first census record that I find John McCafferty in – he married Mary Burrow in 1857. I was unable to verify a location and family for him prior to 1860.

[7] This was a lucky find – especially since McCafferty was spelled incorrectly – and the children names were incomplete

[8] Jane Burrows, reported as widow and mother-in-law, last time seen in a census report – unfortunately did not report birth location of parents.

[9] Margaret McCafferty, widow of John McCafferty (no relationship at this time). I tracked this family from Iowa to Kansas – where they were located in the same area as John McCafferty and his family.

[10] George (Lafe) McCafferty – this is the only record I have that shows George’s actual middle name as “Layfaette” – he was often referred to as “Lafe” instead of “George”.

[12] George and Nellie were the parents of my great-grandmother, Gladys Lydia McCafferty. Gladys married Orlo W. Schick in 1909 Shawnee County. In the 1910 census, a son named Kenneth is reported - I have no other record of Kenneth. In 1914, Gladys married my great-grandfather Edward Henry Grabow and had four children. Gladys married two more times before her 1985 death in Kansas.

[13] McCafferty spelled incorrectly in census – this is one reason why finding this family in previous census records has been difficult.

[16] While following a lead on the Walker family I ran across Lizzie McCafferty. John’s obituary mentioned a daughter named Lizzie who married a Wycoff – I do not know if this is her.

[17] I started looking in this county because George McCafferty’s obituary reported his birth in Republic County, IA – this closest match to this was Republic, in Chickasaw County, IA. Burton and his mother Frances ended up in Butler Co, IA in 1880 with a new husband/father – this is where I ran across Lizzie McCafferty (a possible link with John McCafferty family).

[18] I can not account for the Bridget McCafferty that died around the same time as George Lafe McCafferty's wife, Nellie. She could be a sister-in-law to John, an ex-wife, or may not have a relationship to him at all.

[19] When I found the headstone of George and Nellie McCafferty, I learned that George was born 1864 and died in 1953 - I was unable to locate an obituary because I did not have his exact death date. The death date on the headstone for Nellie was incorrect - it was marked as 1907.
