Much of the pre-stateside information I have on my Mohney line came via the following sources: "Eighteenth Century Emigrants from the Northern Alsace to America" (Picton Press, Camden, ME, 1992), by Annette K. Burgert; and "Three Mauney Families", by Bonnie Mauney Summers, 1967. Additional source documentation came through a newsletter publication, "The MOHNEY Line", by Carol J. (Mohney) White of Glenwood, Iowa and her devoted subscribers. There is an accumulation of biographical articles in a book titled: HISTORY OF CLARION COUNTY, written in 1887 by A. J. Davis, which gives excellent background information on the Mohney family. Also, my sources include the LDS Church ancestral files and various Mormon family history libraries that enabled my many hours of census records research. Correspondence from Mohney relations, as well as numerous genealogy sites on the Internet, also contributed to my research data. I need to give a special thanks to Frederick Mooney (distant relation), of Texas, who provided me with my initial ancestry research education and a treasure trove of Mohney data that got me started into my genealogy affliction - I accidentally crossed his path in the Amarillo Library one fateful day in July 1994.
One difficulty in researching the Mohney name is the variety of spellings that I have come across - if you can imagine it—it can be spelled that way. Some of the versions are: Mauny, Mawny, Mohnie, Mony, Mooney, Manni, Mani, Many, Mann, Money, and even Mong or Maung.
I have begun my Mohney line from Germany, with Hans Jacob Manni, born in 1691, and marrying Anna Maria Werli on 25 August 1716. The records for this information originate from the Keskastel Lutheran Church, Alsace. It is believed that Hans Jacob Manni was the son of Jacob Manny who came from Dolen in Canton Bern, Switzerland and death recorded 18 March 1725 at Diedendorf Reformed Church, in Germany. Hans Jacob and Anna Maria Manni had four known children baptised in Germany before their immigration to the states. The last child was Johann Adam Mani, baptised 3 December 1724 at Diedendorf Reformed church - he is the reported forefather of my American Mohney ancestral line.
The Hans Jacob Manni family were recorded as passengers on the ship "Lydia" that was at the port of Philadelphia , Pennsylvania on 29 September 1741. About 1749, Johann Adam Mani is reported to have married Anna Maria Dorothea Odenwalder, also of Germany. Hans Jacob and his son Johann Adam settled and remained in the area of Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, until their deaths. Johann Adam Mani's son, Adam Mauny, married Anna Maria (Mary) Catherine Hilgert in 1772 Northampton County - Mary was the daughter of Johann Franz and Christina Hilgert. Adam and Anna left the region to settle in Armstrong/Clarion County, Pennsylvania some time around 1808 to 1811.
Adam Mauny owned a large tract of land in the Armstrong County, PA region (1100 acres) and is said to have divided it equally between his 11 children by the time of his death, in 1818. Adam is buried in Oakridge Cemetery, Armstrong County, PA. Most of Adam Mauny's children are named in his will; there are other branches yet to be determined.

JOHANN ADAM MOHNEY, JUNIOR was born 1754 in Williams Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, and died 23 February 1818 in Millville, Redbank Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (Source: Armstrong County, PA Vital Records, Will Number 9347.) He married MARIA CATRINA HILLIARD abt. 1770 in Williams, Pennsylvania (Source: “Mary Haun.”), daughter of JOHANN HILGEERT and ANNA MANY.
After their marriage, Adam and Caty settled in Williams Township, Northampton County, PA. Adam served in the Revolution. He and his father are both listed on the Militia of the county. One was a private, in the company of Christian Schouss on 21 May 1772, the other was a Corporal (PA Archives, Volume III, Fifth Series, page 524.) Williams Township tax records of 1780 list Adam Manny, Junior, whose land was taxed at 325 pounds, was married, and was a farmer. In 1785, he sold his property, and the family moved to Upper Mount Bethel Township, where the Federal Tax List shows him as Adam Mawney, owning 150 acres, 2 horses, and 3 cattle, paying 16.3 pounds. In 1786, he had added 10 acres and paid 13.7 pounds in taxes. In 1788, he was up to 165 acres, 2 horses, and 3 cattle, paying 15.9 pounds for taxes. On 30 March 1790, he was issued a Warrant for 15 acres and on 2 June 1790, a warrant for an additional 221 acres. In 1810, he appears on the PA census of Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, PA.
Several of his children moved further west, settling in Armstrong County, PA. In 1808, Adam purchased 1100 acres of land in Redbank Township, Armstrong County, PA from Timothy Pickering of Wenham, Massachusetts and 2 men from Philadelphia , PA. His warrant was number 441 and contained 1137 acres, 84 perches, with allowances for roads. The deed was issued to Adam Mawney, of the Township of Upper Mount Bethel in the County of Northumberland. He made the first payment of $160 acres on 9 April 1811, with a second payment of $3200 to be made on the first day of May in 1811. The final payment of $1464.04 was to be paid on the first day of May in 1812. Adam signed his name in German: Adam Mani, and Caty signed her mark. (This land later became part of Redbank Township, Clarion County, PA. John Mohney, John Shafer, Jacob Hetrick, and the Doverspike family were among the first settlers from 1801 until 1805, according to Caldwell’s Illustrated Historical Combination Atlas of Clarion County, PA – published by J.A. Caldwell in 1877. Caldwell stated that some of the settlers came from Westmoreland County and some from Lehigh County.)
Adam’s land lay along both sides of the Lycamahoning, later known as the Red Bank Creek due to the red color of the soil along its banks, with his homestead on the north. There is said to have been a vein of quartz on the property which, according to the Armstrong County History, pages 189-90, “appeared to be about 18 inches thick, and several rods long, and just above it a spring of very good water.” The Indians used the quartz to make arrowheads. For years, settlers found arrowheads and bits of quartz on the land. Adam’s children and some nephews, along with their families, settled along both sides of the creek, in an area which is still designated “Mahney’s Crossroads” on the Armstrong County Map.
The Mohney’s were charter members of the Trinity Evangelical and Reformed German Church, of Alcola, Red Bank Township, Armstrong County (now Clarion County), PA. Near by still stands the Yost Smith homestead. Yost married Adam’s daughter, Magdalena.
The land which Adam purchased became the foundation of the towns of Hawthorne, Millville, and West Millville. These towns were laid out and named, but were not improved until after his death.
Adam’s will is on file in the Armstrong County, PA courthouse, Will Book I, page 30, and was written in a mixture of German and English. His son Isaac, and son-in-law, Jacob Miller, were the executors. Many of his children were not mentioned because they had already received land before his death. Catherine and Adam are buried in the Alcola Cemetery. Many of their descendants still live in the “Valley of the Red Bank.”[91]
ISAAC MOHNEY was born 15 August 1788 in Upper Mount Bethel Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania, and died 15 January 1834 in Millville, Redbank Township, Armstrong County, Pennsylvania (Source: Armstrong County, PA Vital Records, Will #341.) He married EVA SCHAFFER 1816 in Armstrong County, PA (Source: “Carol Jamison.”), daughter of JOHANNES SCHAFFER and MARGARETHA SCHNEIDER.
Isaac was baptized at the Upper Mount Bethel Church in Stone Church, PA on 8 Oct 1788. Stone Church is about 20 miles north of Easton, PA, about 4 miles south of the Delaware Water Gap on route 611. He may have been married and widowed before moving to Redbank Township, Armstrong County, PA as his oldest son was born between 1810 and 1814, when Eva would have been only 13 to 17 years old. Isaac and Eva bought a parcel of land from ADAM and SUSANNA SHIREY MOHNEY on 26 February 1820, receiving 53 acres and 120 perches for $310.52. This land was in Redbank Township, Armstrong County, PA and was later sold to Philip Huffman of Jefferson County, PA on 7 June 1828 for $350. Isaac served as executor of his father’s will, assisted by his brother-in-law, Jacob Miller. Isaac and Eva lived near Millville, Armstrong County, PA. 1820 Census Records for Redbank Township, Armstrong County, PA show the following people in Isaac and Eva’s household: 1 male >45, 1 male 26-45 (Isaac), 2 males under 10, 1 female 26-45, 1 female 16-26 (Eva). The 1830 Census records for the same location show: 1 male 40-50 (Isaac), 3 males under 5 (Valentine, Jesse, Samuel), 1 male over 10 (Abraham), 1 male 15-20 (John), 1 female 30-40 (Eva), 1 female under 5 (Susanna), and 2 females 5-10 (Catherine, Mary). Eva is not listed as a head of household in 1840 so she must have either moved in with of her children or had already died. Isaac served as sponsor or Joseph and Elizabeth Miller’s son, Isaac. In Isaac’s will (Armstrong County, PA #341), he left to his wife, his bay mare “called Fox” among other things. The will was made on 17 January 1834 and registered on 20 February of the same year. It was signed in German by Isaac. To his son, John, Isaac left one dollar, which was all the “he is ever to receive of my estate, real or personal.” It is probable that John had already received his share of the estate. There were evidently no hard feelings as John and his wife, Holdia, chose Eva to be sponsor of their first child, Harriet, who was born in 1835.
William Mohney has his date of death as 17 January 1843.
Notes for EVA SCHAFFER:
She was baptized at Himmel Luthern Church on 8 Oct 1897 and her paternal grandparents were her sponsors. Eva served as sponsor for her granddaughter, Harriet, daughter of Johannes and Holdia. She was also a sponsor of Eva Anna, born in 1834, daughter of George and Polly Scheder (Schneider - probably a relative of Eva’s as her mother was a Schneider.)
[92]John F. Mohney, proprietor of a livery, feed and sale stable in New Bethlehem, is a representative of one of the oldest and most highly respected families of Clarion county. He traces his ancestry back to Adam Mohney, a native of Germany, who crossed the Atlantic to the New World in the latter years of 1700, settled in Northampton county, Penn., and in 1808 came to Clarion county, Penn., and purchased 1,100 acres of land near West Millville. Returning to Northampton county, Penn., he brought to his new home his large family of children, some of whom were already married. He died in West Millville, and was laid to rest in Oakridge cemetery in Armstrong county, Pennsylvania.
John Mohney, the son of Adam and great-grandfather of our subject, married Catherine Wagner, and they became the parents o the following children: Maria, Elizabeth, Susanna, Mary, Catherine, Sarah, Lydia, Christina, Frederick, Jacob, Adam, John and Abram. It was in 1811 that John Mohney and wife came from Northampton county, Penn., to Clarion county and located upon a portion of the land which his father had purchased, erecting a large stone house thereon in 1824. He was a framer by occupation, and a Democrat in politics, while religiously he was a member of the German Reformed Church. Both he and his wife died on the old homestead, and were buried at Oakridge.
The grandfather of our subject, Frederick Mohney, was born in Northampton county, in 1801, and was therefore but ten years of age when brought by his parents to Clarion county, where he subsequently engaged in agricultural pursuits. Here he married Miss Ann Maria Kaster, a native of the Northampton county, and a daughter of Philip Kaster, who was of German descent, and was a soldier in the war of 1812. Of the twelve children that graced this union, three died in infancy and nine reached years of maturity, namely: David, Elizabeth, Jeremiah, Catherine, Sophia, Mary Ellen, Christina, Calvin F. and Mathias. The father of this family died at the age of sixty-nine, and the mother at the age of eighty-two years. They were consistent members of the Reformed Church, and highly respected by all who knew them.
David Mohney, our subject’s father, was born, reared and educated in Porter township, Clarion county, and in early life successfully engaged in general farming. When the war broke out, however, he laid aside civil pursuits, and on August 29, 1861, enlisted in the first call for three years’ men, being commissioned first lieutenant of Company C, 78th P.V.I. He was a brave and fearless soldier, always found at his post of duty, and for seventeen months was in active service in Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. Having seriously injured his ankle while climbing a stone wall, he was then honorably discharged on the surgeon’s certificate, and returned home.
In Clarion county, in April 1848, was celebrated the marriage of David Mohney and Miss Elizabeth Emhoff, a native of the county, her parents, John and Catherine Emhoff, being old settlers here, where their deaths occurred. To Mr. and Mrs. Mohney were born eight children, namely: Mrs. Mary C. Silvis; Martin M.; Mrs. Elizabeth Wensell; William Bigler; John F., of this review; Era May Fink; Mrs. Elva Nora Hutson, deceased; and Warren R., a traveling salesman. As a staunch Democrat, David Mohney has always taken an active and prominent part in political affairs, and has done all in his power to insure the success of the party. For three years he served as county commissioner, and since 1876 has most acceptably filled the office of justice of the peace. He has been commander of Colonel Lemon Post No. 260, G.A.R., and in all the various relations of life he has always discharged the duties devolving upon him in a prompt and able manner.
In the county where he still makes his home, John F. Mohney was born December 14, 1860, and in its schools he acquired his education. During his younger years he was variously employed, but for the past eight years has successfully engaged in his present business. His stable is located in the rear of the Commercial Hotel, and he gives special attention to the wants of the traveling men. He has a fine line of carriages of all kinds, good driving horses and experienced drivers, and he thoroughly understands the business in every detail. He is one of the promoters of the telephone line, which has been established in Indiana, Jefferson and Clarion counties, and is still a stockholder and director of the company.
On July 15, 1880, Mr. Mohney was united in marriage to Miss Mary Elizabeth Dunkle, who was also born, reared and educated in Clarion county, and is a daughter of John K. Dunkle, a Union soldier. He father is now deceased, but her mother is still living and makes her home in Reynoldsville, Penn. Politically, Mr. Mohney is identified with the Democratic party, and socially affiliates with the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Knights of the Maccabees. He has served as health officer and chairman of the borough, and is one of the most popular citizens as well as one of the leading and enterprising businessmen of New Bethlehem.
FRED C. MOHNEY, poultry raiser and farmer of Rayburn township, Armstrong county, was born in Red Bank township, this county, Aug. 2, 1858, son of Lewis S. and Rebecca (Shick) Mohney. His great- grand-father, Jonathan Mohney, who founded the family in America, was born in Germany, and on coming to this country settled with his wife in Clarion county, Pa. He was a member of the Reformed Church, the family establishing the first Reformed Church in Clarion county, and his descendants adhere to the same faith. In politics the men of this family have all been Democrats.
Adam Mohney, son of Jonathan, was the grandfather of Fred C. Mohney. He owned a large tract of land in Red Bank Township, where New Bethlehem, Hawthorn, Fairmount, etc., are located. His death occurred in 1832. His children were as follows: John who died in Clarion county in 1910, at the age of ninety-two years; Jonathan; Adam; Fred; Susan; Mrs. Hartsell, and Lewis S.
Lewis S. Mohney, son of Adam was born in Red Bank township, Clarion county, in 1824, and died at the age of seventy-seven years. He died at the home of his son F. C. Mohney, in Kittaning. He enlisted in the support of the Union cause during the Civil war, but was never called upon to serve. Mr. Mohney married Rebecca Shick, who was married Aug. 20, 1827, in Red Bank township, Armstrong county, and died at the age of sixty-eight years, at Hawthorn, Clarion county. They had the following children: Jacob, who died at Kittaning; Dr. Adam M., who died in Clarion county; William, who died in the West; Fred C.; Dr. Christ, who died in Clarion county; Lizzie, Mrs. Jud. McMillan, of Punxsutawney, Pa., where she died; Charles, who died in Oklahoma; Christina, John and Monroe, all of whom died in infancy.
Fred C. Mohney grew to manhood at Hawthorn, Clarion county, Pa., where his father had a store, moving there in 1865. He learned the trade of carpenter, and for many years was employed at such work in Kittaning, where for nineteen years he was employed by the American Planning Mill Company, becoming foreman in the planning mill. He became quite well known in that Borough, serving as member of the city council, and won the confidence of his fellow citizens to such an extent that in 1908 he was elected county auditor, giving highly credible service in both capacities. He moved from the borough to engage in the poultry business, buying a piece of land in Rayburn township one mile from Kittanning, a valuable property of twenty-four acres to which he has since given the greater part of his time and attention. He built a fine brick house there, and has made many other improvements on the place. He is specially interested in poultry, raising White Leghorn, and Rhode Island Red stock. The work required scientific care and constant application, but is an excellent field for a progressive and enterprising worker, and Mr. Mohney has done very well in all of his undertakings.
In 1882 Mr. Mohney was married to Rebecca R. Emhoff, who was born Jan. 12, 1862, in Jefferson county, and when quite young moved to Armstrong county with her parents, John and Sarah (Mohney) Emhoff, the family settling on a farm three miles from New Bethlehem. Two children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Mohney: Lloyd, born March 7, 1883, is engaged as a druggist at Kittaning; in 1913 he married Jane Ann McIlwain. Olive E., born Jan 12, 1886, died May 27, 1913; she was the wife of Henry C. Holly. from Pittsburgh, now employed as electrician at Ford City by the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company.[93]
ADAM MONROE MOHNEY, M.D., an eminent physician and surgeon of Rimersburg, was born December 13, 1850, in Red Bank township, Armstrong county, Penn., and is the son of Lewis S. and Rebecca (Shick) Mohney, natives of Clarion and Armstrong counties, respectively. His paternal grandfather, Adam Mohney, was born east of the mountains, in this State, and in the latter part of the eighteenth century came to Clarion county, where he spent his remaining years engaged in farming. In Red Bank township he took up a large tract of land, including the present sites of New Bethlehem and Maysville, and a part of the place is still owned by the Doctor’s uncle, John Mohney, who is now eighty-four years of age. Jacob Shick, the maternal grandfather, was also born east of the mountains, and became a pioneer settler of Armstrong county, where he followed agricultural pursuits until his death.
The Doctor’s parents were married in Armstrong county, where they continued to make their home until 1862, when they removed to West Millville, Clarion county. There the mother died in April 1894, aged sixty-six years, and was buried at the White Church in Clarion county. Throughout his active business life the father engaged in farming and mechandising at both New Salem and West Millville, but since 1894 has lived retired, and now makes his home with our subject. He was born July 24, 1824. He has acceptably filled several local offices, and is a prominent member of the Reformed Church, to which his estimable wife also belonged.
Dr. Mohney is the second in order of birth in the family of seven children, of whom the others are as follows: Jacob, a resident of Kittanning, Penn.; William, who has never been heard from since he left home in 1877; Frederick, a carpenter of Kittanning; Christian, a physician of Callensburg, Penn.; Elizabeth, deceased wife of Jud McMillen, who is engaged in the express business in Punxsutawney, Penn.; and Charles, an electrician of Cleveland, Ohio.
The Doctor remained under the parental roof until he attained the age of twenty-four, but eight years previous he commenced teaching school-a profession he successfully followed for one decade during the winter seasons, while during the summer months he attended the Corsica and West Millville Normals. At the age of twenty-six he began reading medicine with Dr. Henry, of West Millville, and subsequently was a student at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Baltimore, Md., from which the noted institution he graduated in 1882 with the degree of M.D. From 1881 until 1887 he engaged in practice in Leatherwood, Clarion county, and then came to Rimersburg, where he soon succeeded in building up a large and lucrative practice. Both professionally and financially he has met with success, and, besides his elegant home and office in Rimersburg, he owns a farm and other valuable property.
In May, 1875, at Squirrel Hill, Clarion county, occurred the marriage of Dr. Mohney and Miss Elsie Armagost, Rev. Dotterer officiating. The children born of this union are Blanda F., an accomplished young lady; Branard T., Ruth B. and Florence B., all at home. Mrs. Mohney was born at Squirrel Hill, February 11, 1857, a daughter of Thomas and Susan (Hepler) Armagost, also natives of Clarion county, the former born January 22, 1825, the latter October 18, 1827. The father was a blacksmith by trade, but during the last year of life ill health prevented him from actively engaging in business. He died July 31, 1897, and was buried at Squirrel Hill, but his wife still resides at that place. Both held membership in the Reformed Church, and were highly respected by all who knew them. Mrs. Mohney’s paternal great-grandfather was a native of Berks county, Penn., and was among the earliest settlers of Limestone township, Clarion county. The grandparents, Soffel and Mary (Shuck) Armagost, were also natives of Berks county, and became honored pioneers of Clarion county. Her maternal grandparents, Jacob and Sallie (Hamm) Hepler, came to the county at an early age.
Mrs. Mohney is one of a large family of children, who in order of birth are as follows: Emily and Eliza, who both died in childhood; Mary, wife of Frank Doverspike, a farmer of Kansas; Agnes, widow of J. Dallas Lochlin, a lumber merchant of Wald, Penn., who died August 13, 1897; Elsie, wife of our subject; Alice, wife of J. B. Krotzer, an oil-driller of Butler county, Penn.; Crissie, wife of Philip Fox, a farmer of Curllsville, Penn.; Elizabeth, wife of Dr. C. S. Mohney, of Callensburg, the brother of our subject; William M., a blacksmith of Rimersburg; Ada, wife of Dr. G. B. Woods, of Curllsville; Nettie, wife of James B. Slougenhaupt, a farmer of Piollett, Penn.; and Harry S., a blacksmith of Pitcairn, Pennsylvania.
Fraternally the Doctor is a Royal Arch Mason, belonging to the Chapter in Clarion, and is also a member to the Chapter in Clarion, and is also a member of Odd Fellows Society and the Knights of Pythias in Rimersburg. For the past three years he has served as elder in the Reformed Church, with which he is connected. Although an ardent Democrat in politics he has never aspired to office, preferring to give his undivided attention to his professional duties. The prominent place he has won in the profession is accorded him in recognition of his skill and ability, and the place which he occupies in the social world is a tribute to that genuine worth and true nobleness of character which are universally recognized and honored.
C. S. MOHNEY, M.D. Among the representatives of the medical profession, whose skill and ability have gained them prestige in Clarion County, is this gentleman, a well-known and successful practitioner of Callensburg. He was born in Armstrong County, Penn., April 23, 1860, a son of L. S. and Rebecca (Shick) Mohney, also natives of that county. Both his paternal grandfather, Adam Mohney, and his maternal grandfather, Jacob Shick, were of German descent and honored pioneers of Armstrong County, where they followed the occupation of farming. They were highly respected citizens of the community, and devoted Christians, being faithful members of the Reformed Church.
The Doctor is fifth in the order of birth in a family of seven children, the others being Jacob, Adam M., a practicing physician of Rimersburg, Penn.; William, who is living in the West; Frederick C., who is engaged in the planning mills business; Elizabeth, who married A. J. McMillen, and died in 1895, and Charles L., an employee in the electric light works of Cleveland, Ohio. The mother died in 1891, but the father is still living at the ripe old age of seventy-three, and has made his home with his children since her death. For fifteen years he was successfully engaged in merchandising at different places and conducted a hotel for the same length of time. He was also a stock-drover, selling his horses and cattle in Eastern cities, but has now laid aside business cares and is enjoying a well-earned rest.
Reared in Millville, Dr. Mohney began his education in the common schools of that place, and later attended the West Millville Seminary for four terms. He was also a student in the seminary at Bellview, Jefferson County, for one term, and having thus obtained a good education, he began teaching at the age of sixteen years - a profession he successfully followed for ten consecutive terms. During the last two he read medicine with Dr. A. M. Mohney, his brother, who was engaged in practice in Leatherwood, Penn. In 1885, he entered the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Baltimore, Md., where he graduated two years later, and he at once opened an office in Putneyville. After a year and a half spent in that place he came to Callensburg, where he soon succeeded in building up a large and lucrative practice. He has met with excellent success in his chosen calling, and merits the confidence so freely accorded him. For four years he has served as secretary of the County Medical Society, and is also an honored member of the State and National medical Associations. On June 1, 1887, in Clarion County, Dr. Mohney was married to Miss Elizabeth C. Armagost, a daughter of Thomas and Susannah Armagost, who are of German descent, and have traveled life’s journey together for over half a century. The father, who died July 31, 1897, was a blacksmith by trade, and was one of the leading and prominent members of the Reformed Church, in which he faithfully served as elder or deacon for many years. His life had ever been harmony with his profession, and he was always found in the house of worship at every service. In his family are eleven children, namely: Mrs. Mary Doverspike; Agnes, wife of Mr. Richard; Mrs. Mattie Laughlin; Elsie, wife of Dr. A. M. Mohney brother of our subject; Mrs. Alice Krotzer; Mrs. Crissie Fox; Elizabeth wife of our subject; Adda, wife of Dr. Wood; Mrs. Nettie Slaughenhoupt, and William M. and Harry B., both blacksmiths by occupation. Dr. and Mrs. Mohney have two daughters- Nettie B., born in October 1888; and Rebecca M., born in December 1891.
Our subject and his wife are both members of the Reformed Church. The Doctor is a Master Mason, a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the American Mechanics and the Knights of the Maccabees. Deeply interested in his profession, he is a close student of medical journals, and does all in his power to perfect himself in his chosen calling. He is not only one of the leading physicians of the county, but is also one of its representative and highly-respected citizens.
James was born in Rimersburg, Clarion Co., Pa. In 1909, at the age of 21, while a resident of Rathmael, Pa., he was out hunting, and his dogs caused a distraction, he accidently shot himself in the left arm. He and his wife Lottie, first resided in Rimersburg after marrying in 1912, and even at one time moved with his wife’s family out to Youngstown, Mohoning Co., Ohio., also Curtisvffle and NuMine, Pa. He moved his family to Freeport, Armstrong Co., Pa. in 1935. James by occupation was a coal miner, and moved to different coal mining towns, to find work in the mines. He retired from Coal Mining in 1941, employed by Hicks Coal Company of Butler Junction, Buffalo Twnp., Butler Co., Pa. (next to Freeport, and included with Freeport). For the next several years, he was employed by the Freeport Water Company. James was also a avid former of unions in the workplace. This was a dangerous idea in the early 20th century. One time when organizing a union in the workplace, some men were tring to haul James off to jail, his mother, Mary fended the men off, from trying to take her son to.. Jail. Because of smoking and working in the mines, James suffered from asthma and emphazema. James was one of the first pace maker recipents, and the first recipent in Western Pennsylvania. His death was not caused by his early pace maker. One time while, he was working for the Freeport Water Company, his Granddaughter, Bonnie (Mohney) Collar, brought her boyfriend (and future husband) Don Collar, to meet her Grandad. He at the time was below the street, working on the water line. What a funny first impression to make![94]

By the summer of 1864 the Confederate prisoner of war camp at Andersonville, Georgia was acutely overcrowded with captured Union soldiers. Over 30,000 prisoners were crammed into a 26 acre stockade, which had originally been constructed to accomodate 10,000. The combination of lack of food, shelter and medicine conspired with the overcrowded conditions to send the mortality rate skyrocketing.
General John H. Winder, Confederate commissary general of prisons sought solutions to these problems. By the end of July he had sent representatives to scour the countryside in search of another prison site. Within a week they had found a seemingly perfect location.
The selected spot was five miles north of Millen, Georgia on the present day site of Magnolia Springs State Park. It featured plentiful amounts of drinking water, furnished by a naturally flowing spring which yielded more than 6,000 gallons of fresh-water per minute. Several slopes above the spring would allow for the placement of gun batteries to protect the stockade. The site was also near the Augusta and Savannah Railroad.
The new prison was named Camp Lawton and it would be nearly twice the size of Andersonville. Winder wrote: "It is, I presume, the largest prison in the world; it contains 42 acres."
With the hasty construction complete, prisoners began to
arrive by October 15, Winder informed Confederate Adjutant-General Samuel
Cooper: "We can with great convenience accomodate 32,000 prisoners...and
could without inconvenience increase it to 40,000."
These lofty plans, however, were not to be. William Tecumseh Sherman's Union
army had captured Atlanta that fall. On November 10 he had set out from there,
with his likely objective being Savannah. This would bring him very near to
Millen and would make Camp Lawton a sure target. Indeed, as early as October 9,
Sherman had written: "I propose we...stike out with wagons for
Milledgeville, Millen and Savannah...I can make the march, and make Georgia howl."
Thus it was that on November 25 Winder reported that all prisoners thad been evacuated. Days later one wing of Sherman's army passed through Millen. A report written on November 8 reveals that 10,229 prisoners had been recieved to that time. At least 486 of these died, 349 enlisted in Confederate Service and 285 were detailed to work at the post. The report listed 9,394 prisoners present at the time.
The prisoners were all gone and the war ended by the next spring. Only the dead were left at Camp Lawton. In 1867 Lawton National Cemetery was created and 748 bodies interred there. 685 were listed as casualties of the prison; the rest were victims of nearby battles. However, within a year, a dispute over property rights with the previous owner of the cemetery land forced the removal of all remains to Beaufort National Cemetery in South Carolina. Thus ended the saga of the largest prison camp of America's Civil War.

The majority of my Hawk genealogy record comes from the LDS ancestral files and from census records. The first Hawks of this research were Hans Jerg (George - born 1707) and Catherine Hawk of Germany. Their son, Conrad was the first Hawk immigrant, of my line, to arrive in the United States. Conrad was married to Catherine Williams, daughter of Thomas and Naeima Williams. Conrad and Catherine's oldest son, George, married Anna Elizabeth Walthour. Their son, Michael, was born in 1788 Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania - Michael was my fourth great-grandfather. Michael Hawk married Susanna Kepple in 1813. Susanna was the daughter of Daniel and Anna Elizabeth Yearien Kepple. I first located Michael Hawk in Armstrong County (later to be Clarion County), PA—where Michael Hawk died in 1856, and his wife, Susanna, died in 1864 (did not find her in the 1860 census).
Special thanks go to cousin, William (Bill) Mohney, for providing me with crucial source documentation via a book by Kenneth Hawk Slaker titled, "Early German Hawk Families From Westmoreland Co., PA". The book provides confirmation of family information concerning my third great-grandparents, Adam and Elizabeth Hawk Mohney.
Thanks to cousin, Patrick Collar, I also have a large amount of early Hawk information via Carl Bennett of California - much of the information is in the form of Hans Jerg Hag (George Hawk) family descendants data.
Elizabeth Ann Hawk was born on 17 Jan 1816 in Allegheny TWP, Westmoreland Co, PA - the daughter of Michael and Susanna Kepple Hawk. Information on Elizabeth can be found on page 48 of Slaker's book - she had been named after Michael Hawk's mother and was baptized a Lutheran on 11 Aug 1816. Elizabeth married Adam Mohney around 1837. They had 9 children - their last child was James B. Mohney (born 21 Mar 1857), he was my great-great-grandfather. Adam Mohney died on Christmas day in 1857, from complications suffered by a kick from a horse. Elizabeth's death is recorded as 9 Jan 1878.

Bill the last I heard Kenneth Hawk Slaker had just a few copies and he was selling to direct descendants. I guess when I ordered from him several years ago he had quite a few copies… My line is not one of his direct lines so I was lucky…
He has on pg 50 Land indenture Book 13, pg 259 Madison Twp Clarion Co DAVID HAWK ET AL TO GEORGE HAWK…& the text…then at bottom it has Elizabeth Mohney (widow)
Elizabeth and Adam’s ch are listed with their birth dates and their spouses. There were 8 ch. Three of them, Simon, Sarah Jane and Susanna settled in Erie, PA.
Which is your line?
The siblings of Elizabeth are listed and it appears Elizabeth had a brother Simon who m. Elizabeth Mohney. Her parents were John and Hannah Mohney.
Slaker has put the census records in the back of his book. He has some pictures. I believe you would enjoy talking to him or corresponding. You might be cousins! Good luck.

BINGO! Hi Bill…I’m looking in a book from Kenneth Hawk Slaker. Do you have access to it or have you information from it? Title: Early German Hawk Families from Westmoreland Co, PA. I’ve consulted it quite often. He has my family toward the back (George Hawk line.)
This Elizabeth Hawk you are speaking of is on page 48. Elizabeth Hawk 2nd ch of Michael and Susanna Hawk, b 17th Jan 1816 in Allegheny Twp. Westmoreland Co. She was named after Michael’s mother and was baptized a Lutheran on the 11 th of Aug 1816.
She m. Adam Mohney b. 15 Dec 1809, in Germany. They made their home in Madison Twp, Clarion Co and raised 8 ch. Adam d. Christmas Day in 1857 from injuries received by a kick from his horse.
It goes on with their children… Oh I see I have their ch. Underlined as some lived in Erie, PA my birth/home town. If you don’t have Slaker’s book you should try to get a copy of it… he has done an excellent job and he would be you cousin I believe.
